ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the evolution of the periphery doctrine as a concept loosely based on geography. We observe how in the words of strategic thinkers, it now includes countries far away from Israel’s “core.” Specifically, it looks at Israel’s policy with the two Asian rising powers: India and China. In both cases, the extent of the economic relation is evidenced but we also underline the uncertainty of the strategic dimension of these ties. Similarly, the chapter evaluates the speculations over an Israeli–Gulf rapprochement. If these ties have been the object of numerous rumors – as well as public declarations and meetings – their scope is in reality very limited and does not portend an emerging alliance.
