ABSTRACT

The way that our musical skills develop in the early years of our childhood depends on the environment we are brought up in. Think back to our early childhood. The musical activities initiated by parents and the musical resources available to them in the home vary widely. The kind of music to which the child is exposed will depend on parental preferences. Parents may listen to very different genres, for instance, jazz, grunge, hip hop, classical music. Musical training plays a role in musical preferences, but other factors are also important. Our relationships, the way we live and our beliefs are all related to our musical preferences. Some young people have no formal musical education, whereas others play several instruments and actively participate in a wide range of ensembles. Much musical engagement involves the reproduction of music created by others, although increasingly, there has been an acknowledgement that every individual can be musically creative.
