ABSTRACT

The development of electronic media in the latter part of the 20th century revolutionised access to and the use of music in our everyday lives. In the Western world, music is in evidence in almost every aspect of our lives. Sometimes teenagers use music as a vehicle to express anger by storming into their bedrooms and turning up the volume of their music to express their feelings. Listening to specific pieces of music can support the recall of events and experiences and the emotions associated with those experiences, what people were listening to when they heard the outcome of a major examination or job interview. In some cultures, music making is a central everyday activity. One of the ways that music is used commercially is to impact on one's levels of arousal. Music is used in films to manipulate one's emotions and commercially to encourage him/her to remember products, purchase them and influence his/her shopping, eating and on hold behaviour.
