ABSTRACT

KanurÍ is the language of the Kanúri living mostly in Bornu Province which lies west of Lake Chad and belongs to the Northern Provinces of Nigeria. This language is also spoken, or at least understood, by some of the neighbouring tribes in areas north-east, north, and south-east of Bornu. The term Kanúri comprises the descendants of the kings of. Nachtigal in their histories of Bornu tell us that the Kanuri came from Kanem, east of Lake Chad, where they lived in Bhttps://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315104430/fcc4f56d-50cd-4f80-8ed0-f8dc9cca949c/content/reac.tif"/>rnyi Njívì. After the fall of Bhttps://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315104430/fcc4f56d-50cd-4f80-8ed0-f8dc9cca949c/content/reac.tif"/>rnyi Gazargәmó in 1808, they scattered over the whole of Bornu country: the majority now live in Yerwa, the residency of the Shehu of Bornu, some of them live in Dikwa, some in the country. In a wider sense the term Kanuri means the Kanuri-speaking population of Bornu.
