ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the dichotomy that exists between space and globalization. It introduces the theoretical foundations by defining the concept of space from a globalization perspective, and the distinctive dynamics of de-territorialisation and re-territorialization. The chapter also discusses the origins of the sector from its early developments to the most recent dynamics of the business of space. Within this context, the emergence of the business of space is one of the direct consequences of globalization. The chapter focuses on the opposite trend by which the emergence of the space sector has also in turn facilitated and enabled some of the dynamics of globalization ultimately leading to the fraying of globalization. In sum the relationship between globalization and the business of space appears as a two-way process – on the one hand, the business of space stems as a direct result from globalization; on the other hand, the industry plays a pivotal role in shaping the recent dynamics affecting globalization.
