ABSTRACT

The international space launch industry plays a pivotal role in enabling commercial and non-commercial actors to engage in civilian and military space activities. Once we have defined the evolution of the sector within the context of globalization, we were then presented with the task of having to define the space industry. It became apparent that many articles and experts who analyze the "space industry" do not in fact manage to define the industry. In terms of innovation, according to many industry actors, the market for commercial satellites will be divided by 2020 between satellites with conventional chemical propulsion and satellites with electric hybrid propulsion. The chapter outlines the main dynamics affecting the upstream segment of the sector by focusing on satellites launch and manufacturing, the pursuit of resources, the undisputed role of the military sector as well as the manned space flight sector.
