ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses some alternative future visions of the world, and their implications for the evolution of the space sector. It suggests that the scenario approach is clearly preferable, since the drivers are broadly defined and involve complex interactions with a wide range of variables over a long period of time. The innovators that make use of satellite capacity in the downstream community are increasingly thriving on mobility needs and new digitalization tools. Once defined, the likely scenarios for the space industry, the organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development report on Space and Innovation focuses on the drivers of space innovation and its likely trajectories for the future by identifying several themes. In terms of development of the space industry, space firms will be able restructure globally to take full advantage of economies of scale and scope. The sources of innovation in the space sector can be traced to recent evolutions in industrial processes and technologies.
