ABSTRACT

Open arguments are the best tool we have to resolve cultural conflicts and form agreement, but given conflicts of values, we need to recognize that arguments are always fragile and imperfect constructions. The best hope under such circumstances is toleration, better understanding of rational thinking, and humility in the face of imperfect judgment. While we may never be able to eliminate cultural conflict, we can prevent cultural conflicts from erupting into cultural wars and physical violence by engaging with diverse points of view through deliberation.
