ABSTRACT

As much as the personalist ethic played a key role in the modernization process, the end product of that process is the emergence of a personalist – not individualistic – urban society. Chapter 6 analyzes the city as a network community where city residents constantly make efforts to build personal networks based on personal ties and, consequently, personalist urban Koreans have yet to develop proper rules and regulations of social interaction with strangers (other citizens) in the public space.
