ABSTRACT

Violence was used by illegal paramilitary factions as well as by state forces. Efforts have been made to engage and help those harmed by the violence. The conversation offers the person the opportunity to at least begin to acknowledge and take responsibility for the harm caused. The core aim is to use one particular example of the person's own behaviour to help increase their understanding and ultimately their empathy. If the person's use of violence has been directed towards, or witnessed by, a child or young person, then this element may be directly related to this reality. All violence leaves a legacy of some sort which cannot be undone. Suggest to the person that a starting point may be to put on record their acknowledgement that they and no one else is responsible for the violence that has been used.
