ABSTRACT

John Rusesabagina lived through the horrific genocide and violence that occurred in Rwanda in the 1990s. He has also asserted that many violent acts were based on emotion. Emotion plays its part within many acts of common violence – anger, shame, humiliation, frustration and others are often associated with acts of aggression. In introducing the conversation, point out that emotions or feelings can play a significant part in any area of behaviour and this is no different with violence. The emotions that the person has associated with their use of violence can be returned to shortly. As with the emotions in general, there are differing views about anger. The approach taken is that anger is a natural, normal emotion that we all experience. The men who used violence were more likely to report no significant emotional changes, turmoil or disturbance in their own feelings of control in response to stress or conflict within their relationships.
