ABSTRACT

The chapter analyzes Hezbollah’s conceptions of political order. It shows that in the case of Hezbollah it is not possible to identify clear conceptions of political order because for the Shiite organization its core norm of resistance – including violent and non-violent forms of resistance – has priority over questions related to political order. Hezbollah’s resistance enables the organization to uphold its power status in Lebanon and structures its interactions. This is why the organization shows a commitment to the Lebanese political order as long as this supports its interests but endangers exactly this political order whenever its resistance gets under threat.
