ABSTRACT

The chapter shows that the intention to preserve power is the most important factor that characterizes Hezbollah’s and Hamas’ respective conceptions of political order. It illustrates that both organizations use their core norm of resistance to preserve their power status in the specific context they are engaged in. As this context differs sharply from each other, the organizations’ interactions towards power preservation lead to different conceptions of political order. This is why Hezbollah has less specific conceptions of political order than Hamas. The organizations religious orientation, i.e. Shiite and Sunni Islamist political thought, serves as a frame of reference only.
