ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the importance of events in contemporary society with review of the literature that supports the proposition that cities are increasingly eventful. An examination is made of the relationship between events and urban rhythms – the patterns of movements and activities that give structure to modern life. Movements to attend events can disrupt other, more frequent rhythms while creating outcomes that are personally meaningful and reinforcing social relationships. Event planning and event design feature prominently as decision-making in these areas influences the creation and form of eventscapes. A case study demonstrates the complexity of designing places at events, which offer exclusive hospitality. The discussion about mega-events provides opportunities to highlight the way cities are transformed and to review different types of event experiences.
