ABSTRACT

The term scapes is used as analytical toolbox, to draw on concepts from a wide range of disciplines to examine the relationship between events and their environmental settings, paying particular attention to the representation of events in the landscape. Key scapes such as landscapes, sportscapes and servicescapes are discussed to better understand ways of seeing in art and design and the ideologies that accompany these creative practices. The practical utility of scapes is revealed by examining the way environmental settings are managed to achieve specific outcomes. The culmination of an extensive literature review is the development of a conceptual framework to explain the productive forces, both local and global, that create eventscapes.
