ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and explores the question of whether climate-related mobility is increasingly being recognised globally as a priority policy issue. It reviews the accumulating stock of international policies and initiatives relevant to climate-related mobility and examines in detail how international and other organisations have developed their approaches to this issue. It looks at six policy areas defining main UN actions on climate-related mobility: climate change; disaster risk reduction and management; human rights; refugees; migration; and sustainable development. It summarises the key UN-level milestones with a focus on agreements reached at COPs 16, 18, 19 and 21-25. The establishment of the Taskforce on Displacement is reviewed, and alternative UN and state-led climate migration initiatives, such as Nansen, Sendai and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, are explored.
