ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we speculate about how we might resist the language of leadership. We begin by discussing some attempts to guard against the negative effects of leadership language. We see these as well intended but ultimately likely to fail because they still rely on the language of leadership. These include versions of critical leadership studies, as well as forms of women’s leadership and collective leadership. Our preference is to try to avoid the language of leadership altogether. We end the chapter with stories of some of our own attempts at avoiding the language of leadership in our own (leadership-saturated) industry.
