ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we sum up our arguments, and look forward to the future. The struggle we advocate is certainly an uphill one because of how institutionalized the language of leadership has become. Also, given that this pro-elite language serves the interest of the powerful it is likely to remain institutionalized. While we are realistic about prospects for success, we are not entirely pessimistic. We think it is possible to be optimistic, at least about the long run prospects for the decline in the use of the language of leadership. Perhaps alongside its growing use, a growing number of people are coming to see that ‘leadership’ is really little more than a fig leaf for corporate elites – hiding the more oppressive aspects of life at work.
