ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we look in more detail at some of the images that the readymade language of leadership calls to mind. We argue that simply talking about ‘leadership’ at work means we almost inevitably talk in positive terms. To explain this we look at three of the major sources from which images of organizational leaders are drawn: (i) the military officer, (ii) political and world leaders, and perhaps a little more surprisingly (iii) ‘hippie’ leaders.
