Pop and Protest

In Chapter 3, the emphasis returns to Morocco’s own history of popular culture protest. Linking these memories of the past to increasingly globalized identities, musicians push back (sometimes in conflicting ways) against colonialism, the oppressions of the post-colonial period, more recent governmental efforts to control the country’s identity, and global religious conservatism.
