ABSTRACT

Key themes of urban post-industrial greenspace are consolidated through this chapter. These spaces are ecologically vibrant, and learning to interpret novel assemblages and political pedigrees is essential to understanding urban nature. The relationship between creative destruction, ecological indeterminacy and aesthetic nonconformity with dominant ideals is delineated, as well as the importance of focusing on the land-based relationships of people’s everyday environments. The chapter closes by emphasizing the importance of openness to unexpected biophysical and human alliances, as well as commitment to research methods and relations that give prominence to urban equity concerns and local strategies for environmental justice.
