ABSTRACT

Reflection is the process that healthcare assistants can use to look back on their work, and although it is usually thought of as a tool to learn from mistakes or poor practice. Reflection is a strategy to develop learning and understanding through experience. It allows the practitioner to understand the experience differently and move on to provide safer practice, less likely to repeat past mistakes. Writing the reflection down is especially useful, and can help the process by allowing the writer to effectively freeze the film, reflect on it, rewind, and review a previous scene having reflected upon a later one. There are also many frameworks or tools that have been developed to assist in the art of structured written reflection, and they may help as a reminder of the different dimensions of reflection and dissuade us from focusing on only that which seems comfortable or convenient.
