ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of being adequately prepared, informed and trained from nurses’ role. There are many opportunities for nurses to work internationally, with Non- Governmental Organisations, to join the military or work with other organisations such as international assistance teams. These experiences provide nurses with an opportunity to work in an unfamiliar environment, experiencing a new culture, gain an appreciation of conditions not seen in their practice, and learn about global health, ethics, professionalism, health systems and policy. Working internationally helps develop resourcefulness, cultural competence and resilience, which are all key skills nurses need regardless of where they work. Working in any resource limited environment will require nurses to adapt to the new situation quickly; nurses often practise in controlled situations, with additional resources and immediate access to specialist staff. Nurses work in the real world and need to make ethical decisions while delivering care.
