ABSTRACT

The Acooli have only a few proper prepositions. Most of these 'prepositions' are originally nouns. A peculiar psychological aspect of things is the basis for the choice of this or that noun for this or that particular preposition. Many prepositions are taken from parts of the body. The rendering of the Acooli preposition in English is often not easy, depending partly on the different aspects of relations. The prepositions in Acooli are either (a) apparently proper or original ones; or (b) taken from nouns for parts of the body; or (c) taken from very common near at hand words. Some prepositions are often preceded by a preposition themselves, as by; this is particularly the case when they appear as nouns with the possessive suffixes added. Several other similar combinations refer to the improper prepositions which are used now as such, and again as nouns.
