ABSTRACT

With regard to grammatical number, the Acooli language holds a special position among the Jii tribes. The characteristic peculiarity of the language consists in the insignificant part the plural plays in it. Normally the direct or accusative object follows the verb. When, however, the direct object is represented by a noun and the dative or indirect object by a personal pronoun, the latter usually precedes; the personal pronoun in this case is suffixed to the verb. The name for any category of beings where sexual distinction exists or is applied, is a common one comprising both sexes, or a name not referring to sex at all. The Acooli language has no grammatical distinction of gender between masculine and feminine. There are then a limited number of nouns which serve to indicate difference of age or state and are at the same time distinct for both sexes.
