ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses German Muslim identity from the research participants’ perspectives. The way in which they perceive their multiple identities is elaborated on. It presents specific details about how they incorporate a German Muslim lifestyle, highlighting their criticisms of narrow-minded identity concepts. When reading the research participants’ self- understandings in the context of multiculturalism debates, it can be said that they all identify as German Muslims, embodying a majority-minority identity. However, their belonging to German society is often questioned from the outside. There is a gap between a multicultural reality and an acceptance of multiculturalism and multicultural identities.
