ABSTRACT

The third chapter reflects on Muslims’ contribution to participatory culture via the development of strong counterpublics. Four case studies are discussed, namely Kuebra Guemuesay’s blog Ein Fremdwoerterbuch, Nuri Senay’s internet video platform muslime.tv, the youth journal Cube Mag and Soufeina Hamed’s comics. The three main features of counterpublics can be found here. First, German Muslims feel excluded, restricted and misrepresented by the dominant public. Second, they offer alternative self-representations. Third, there is an agitational orientation that is directed towards the dominant public, aiming to challenge. Their target group is mainly the wider German society, as there is an intention to make it aware of Muslims’ self-definitions and perspectives.
