ABSTRACT

This chapter presents four case studies whose publics display artistic and civic engagement, which can be best understood as participation in cultural and civic productions, as well as contribution to the wider public. The case studies include Huelya Kandemir’s spiritual music public, the theatrical comedic public Uma Lamo and the social publics Zahnraeder and Lifemakers. Their public engagement can be defined as beyond counterpublics, as features of counterpublics are not relevant. The case studies’ engagement displays other contents. These include spiritual singing, social entrepreneurship, humanitarian aid and comedy theatre. Their motivations range from social commitment and humanitarianism to entertainment and religious inspirations.
