      ABSTRACT

Corpus linguistics has exerted a considerable influence on the field of language teaching. The ways in which corpora have been employed in language pedagogy can be divided into two main categories: indirect and direct applications. In the former, corpora are used to inform the design and development of syllabuses, tests and teaching materials, while in the latter corpus data are used for data-driven learning (DDL); that is, hands-on activities in which learners themselves engage in corpus analysis. This chapter addresses the impact of corpora on teaching vocabulary and discusses both the indirect and direct applications of corpus data. It presents the importance of corpus data for the development of teaching syllabuses, textbooks, dictionaries, pedagogical wordlists and online resources. As regards the direct use of corpus data in the language classroom, the chapter discusses the pros and cons of DDL. It demonstrates the potential of purpose-built pedagogic and teaching-oriented corpora.
