ABSTRACT

Teaching is a profession that does require training, especially in the elementary and secondary contexts. Teachers populate a profession of individuals whose purpose is to help liberate the forces within people, overwhelmingly children, to understand themselves and the world around them. Tenure is designed to protect full-time teachers, not 'adjunct' teachers. One of the fundamental issues about tenure has always been around what teachers teach. Teachers are dictated to by members of the school board and/or the political leaders in their school district and often have no voice in the policies that they have to implement in the classroom. Especially, teachers in elementary and secondary education have the most 'face time' with students, requiring of them that they 'be on' all day. In 2014, the Obama Administration launched the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education program by investing more than $3 billion in federal programs.
