ABSTRACT
How are the sexes represented in Late Mesolithic rock art? What does this empirical corpus tell us about the involvement of women and men in activities like hunting and hunting rituals? How could depictions of humans be related to social role-types defined by anthropology – like great hunters, shamans and Big Men? Operating with the concept of sexe, these issues will be addressed by way of an examination of depictions of humans that are present in the three largest rock art areas of Alta, Nmforsen and Vingen. The issue of the sexes will be understood on the background of a scenario of increased communication and gift exchange during the two last sub phases of the Late Mesolithic.
