ABSTRACT

The world of lighting has begun to find many uses for three-dimensional (3D) printing – from scale lighting fixtures for scenic models to low-heat LED fixtures and end-use items like replacement parts, custom gobos for LED fixtures, and top hats. Although other disciplines, like lighting, sound, projection, and special effects, may not have the most obvious uses for 3D fabrication technologies, more and more they are being seen in every sector of the entertainment industry. Projection can benefit from 3D fabrication technologies on both the design and technical side – whether it is help in creating content or with technical needs like creating manual dowsers for a low-budget solution to video black or custom hardware for mounting projectors in unusual spaces. One unique use of 3D printing for projection design comes from the preeminent design team at 59 Productions, Ltd. Many advanced makeup techniques can be aided by the use of 3D printing too.
