ABSTRACT

Models on Thingiverse, with some exceptions, are typically intended for three-dimensional (3D) printing. Each model is free and posted with licensing information regarding any restrictions for its use. For individuals unfamiliar with 3D modelling, downloading a model may be the easiest way to start printing. The pedestal can be cut off the virtual model, but isolating the subject on its own plane can produce a cleaner catch. Similar to a two-dimensional scanner scanning a piece of paper and turning it into a virtual item, a 3D scanner creates a virtual model out of a physical object. Depending on the scanner, the camera may also perform color mapping. Unlike photogrammetry that likes a busy background, laser line scanning works best when the object is placed in front of a neutrally colored surround with a corner of a wall directly behind the object although some scanner models prefer a black and white calibration pattern as a background.
