ABSTRACT

Ci poems are often concerned with feminine feelings, and those feminine feelings often had to do with the woman’s fate as a longing wife (or lover). Wang Guowei is an expert ci reader, so from this poem about a longing wife, he is able to read a kind of jingjie, a certain state of being. Wang always looks beyond a simple surface reading, to find a philosophical jingjie, and so he reads the “you” in “For you” to mean the ideal of accomplishment and success in learning. What Wang is talking about is how we can seek something our whole lives, then suddenly in a moment of enlightenment, one can finally grasp it. When Wang made thes comments about Li Jing’s lines, he had a good basis for them, first in the microstructure of the poem, the poem’s own use of words, and secondly in the “double context.”
