ABSTRACT
Chapter One lays out the notion of dependency that is central to the dependency critique, the inevitable human dependency of infancy and childhood, illness and certain disabilities, and frail old age. Those who care for dependents I call dependency workers. The chapter discusses features of inevitable human dependency, dependency work and the relationships of dependency, essential features of the work, and the asymmetry that is unavoidable in dependency relations.
