ABSTRACT

Sometimes producers and film financiers will come together around a script or even a treatment and they will assemble a package with key cast and a director. They will take this to festivals or market such as The American Film Market to try to find a distributor. No matter how the packages come together, all movies need actors, producers and at least one director in order to get made and this part of the process has big ramifications for marketing. Offering actors roles against type is a fascinating approach to casting that is a very different trend from what it used to be where audiences would rarely support an actor who played a character out of their comfort zone. An actor or actress with a large social media following can be a huge asset for marketing. The right to marketing consultation generally applies only to the more A-list stars and directors, but it’s important to be aware as a filmmaker.
