ABSTRACT

The Second International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP II) was held in Copenhagen, Denmark in November of 2005. ICARP II did not articulate an integrated comprehensive plan for research in Arctic sustainability. Rather, it includes several documents that spoke of elements of sustainability and sustainable development from social and economic perspectives, in addition to several documents addressing biophysical sciences. This chapter focuses on four ICARP II Science Plans that most closely correspond to sustainability science or research, as defined for the purposes of this book: Science Plans 1, 2, 10, and 111. Science Plan 1 (SP1) was the only one with explicit focus on sustainable development in the title and touched upon by many of its elements, emphasizing economic and social aspects of sustainability. Science Plan 2 (SP2) begins by emphasizing that indigenous peoples are increasingly involved in research agendas as active participants and notes that research agendas set by Arctic indigenous peoples themselves, or reflecting indigenous cultures.
