ABSTRACT

In 1991, Sarah Conn from the Center for Psychological Studies in the Nuclear Age at Harvard Medical School wrote about the self–world connection as connecting personal pain and global crises. The Canadian Psychological Association’s Practice Guidelines for School Psychologists, include District/System-Wide Intervention and Advocacy as “the school psychologist advocates for children and adolescents with learning, developmental, socio-emotional and behavioral exceptionalities”. The frequency of mental health problems, including illness and addiction, are highest in nations with the greatest social inequality. For those with privilege, opportunities and odds of success require little reflection on political, social and economic contributors to mental health. The Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association note that “justice is respecting the dignity and just treatment of all persons” and “societal interest is respecting the need to be responsible to society”. Like multicultural psychology, it is a macro-level perspective that may be used to inform the purposes, methods and outcomes of professional activities.
