ABSTRACT

Liberation psychology in Latin America is presented as a background to other psychologies of liberation. Each of these psychologies offers a representation of the psyche as contextually embedded within worldviews that differ from dominant cultures. Critical consciousness is essential to the development of an awareness of political, social and economic forces associated with identity and power relations at individual and group levels. Counselors and psychotherapists can use this understanding and these skills as a means to promote equity in their practice, the profession and society.
