ABSTRACT

A small but impactful number of social determinants distinguish groups with more frequent and serious mental health challenges. Disadvantaged status compromises health and mental wellness. Social programs make a substantial difference through their equalizing effects. However, government involvement in social welfare is largely a matter of belief and power. Political values that promote social equality also support social investment and programs. Such decisions influence the circumstances of life. Socioeconomic status has a profound influence on individual mental health. Studies of depression identify social contributors.
