ABSTRACT

Zoning is a critical issue related to school communities. This concerns students' eligibility to enroll in particular schools. In some jurisdictions, there is open enrollment, with parents able to exercise choice as to which school their child attends. This chapter discusses this matter in two strategies: link schools with their distal communities and recognize that inclusion is a community matter. It is concerned at how school zoning impacts on the degree of socio-economic status and ethnic mix in schools. The chapter examines three relationships between schools and their distal communities, with a focus on professional entities to implement a collaborative model: wraparound services, full-service schools, and communities of learning. Inclusion goes beyond the school gates and should include the broader community, both during compulsory schooling and beyond into adulthood. At the heart of inclusion is developing a sense of belonging in a family, in a community, in a society.
