ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students are given seven practical group exercises to explore the materiality of objects and their potential use to convey emotional states and life situations. The concept of animism is explained: a worldview that regards all things to be in a continuous state of becoming and does not draw a line between nature and man-made objects. Students consider the anthropological concept of liminality and ‘rites-of-passage’ moments and objects. This chapter will introduce the idea of image-making as a rehearsal process, an approach which will be developed throughout the book.
