ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the diverse methods and the ethics of working as an image maker in public space or with the public. The reader is introduced to play theory, improvisation, and anthropological approaches to space and place from Edward Casey and Doreen Massey. Students experiment with ways of gathering and embedding stories in public spaces and consider how to capture and respond to the drama of everyday life, using a range of visual communication forms, including reportage, performance graphics, narrative environments, socially engaged or participatory art, and public sculptures.
