ABSTRACT

In many respects, a teacher is like the captain of a ship who needs to get from one port of call to a final destination far away. As the captain, she is responsible for the wellbeing of all passengers for the duration of the journey. Once the ship leaves the dockside and sails off into the ocean, she must negotiate two worlds. One way to approach teaching inclusively is to think in terms of universal design. Technology is everywhere. It influences everyday lives—how we bank, date, consume news, communicate, work, purchase, and on and on. And it is increasingly present within schools. High technology devices, more portable and affordable, assist teachers to effectively implement UDL, in that many proactive strategies are built into such devices. Text-to-speech technology is helpful for students with print disabilities and can also be used to support students with disabilities such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or developmental disability.
