ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 is a significant departure from the original version’s discussion of urban design typologies in that it sets the stage and demonstrates various exercises for students and professionals to engage as a learning process—as opposed to listing and simply illustrating various typologies. The chapter begins with a discussion of urban order and how typology can be both a helpful starting point and a dangerous pitfall as global economies compete for spatial identity and branding. The chapter explores through exercises and examples the various compositional structures involved in developing and utilizing building and development typologies in urban design compositions. The key mission of the chapter is to assist developing urban designers in their own exploration and understanding of typology through design composition practice and experimentation.
