ABSTRACT
For some time following Carlyle's visit, a certain improvement of spirits was noticeable in the author's household. The uncertainty in which they had been living until then had partially disappeared. While they in Riga waited daily, hourly for an advance by the Whites who lay at their gates, Bolshevism had suddenly broken out in their rear, in the heart of Europe! Latvia is the gateway through which the Russian Revolution must invade Western Europe. The outbreak of Bolshevism in the very heart of Europe was particularly welcome to the Muscovites at the moment. Through the collapse of German Imperialism and the outbreak of revolution in Hungary the Red troops can venture to push forward against Europe in the north and the south simultaneously. After the fireworks the People's Government graciously distributed beer and vodka among the participants. But the "reliable Communists" received, in spite of the principle of equality and fraternity, more than the other Soviet citizens of lower categories.
