ABSTRACT

Human behaviour is created through the interaction of the individual's psychological state with their environment, therefore our dance performance may be greatly dictated by the social interactions within the class or company. One important factor that may impact on how well the group bonds is the quality of the leadership, which, in the case of dancing, is generally the teacher, choreographer or director. The Multidimensional Model of Leadership is made up of three levels: characteristics, behaviours and outcomes. A charismatic leader is self-confident and assertive, leading to strong emotional attachments within the group. The required behaviour will be an amalgamation of the situational demands combined with the dancer characteristics, such as dancer ability, and dancer motivation. Teachers who demonstrate high levels of instruction and positive feedback and social support, while favouring a democratic, than an autocratic, approach create groups that are highly bonded with increased self-efficacy and enjoyment levels, and low levels of anxiety and burnout.
