ABSTRACT
The best way of giving an idea of the daily life of the workers in the USSR is to describe the conditions under which they live and work. The population of the USSR is increased every year by three and a half millions, much more rapidly in the towns than in the country. The development of industry and the miserable conditions prevailing among the peasantry have resulted in the very rapid growth of the urban populations. Many of the old houses are no longer habitable: all these facts give an idea of the vast needs that must be supplied before the USSR can find themselves on a level with civilised countries in the matter of housing their people. The report of the plenary session of the All-Russian Central Council of Trades Unions stated: Workmen who are ill have to wait ten days before they can see a doctor, medical men are very scarce and there are no hospitals.
