ABSTRACT

Besides differentiating arts from science, the converger/diverger distinction correlates with a wide network of other variables, some of them intellectual, some personal. Divergers are roughly three times as likely to produce such rare responses on Uses of Objects, and on the Drawing. This suggests that divergers scan a wider range of ideas before selecting their responses. By comparison, the converger is usually content with a naturalistic drawing of a street scene, zebras crossing roads, or diagrams – all of them popular themes. A further interesting point about the Drawing concerns people. The convergers are more likely than the divergers to omit people, and have a special taste for deserted ‘lunar’ street scenes. The one important area of differences between convergers and divergers concerns the expression of violence. Convergers are much less likely than divergers to produce uses for objects involving aggressiveness, or to produce violent themes for drawings.
