ABSTRACT

This book set out to examine the processes of urban growth in Southern Europe, and the role planning has played in each of the countries studied, in regulating that growth. In a study such as this, the full story - enormously complex and interwoven with other factors and events as it is — can never be recounted or explained in its entirety, and individual authors' political and ideological standpoints will inevitably influence their historical perspectives. Nevertheless, there are clearly some common features and particular landmarks worthy of final comment.
